What Does the Acronym Stand For?
LGBTQIA stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, and asexual. Each letter represents a distinct sexual orientation, gender identity, or other aspect of human diversity.
Lesbian
A lesbian is a woman who is attracted to other women.
Gay
A gay person is a man who is attracted to other men.
Bisexual
A bisexual person is attracted to both men and women.
Transgender
A transgender person is someone whose gender identity is different from the sex assigned to them at birth.
Queer or Questioning
Queer and questioning are terms that can refer to a person who does not identify with a specific sexual orientation or gender identity, or who is still exploring their identity.
Intersex
An intersex person is someone who is born with physical characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female.
Asexual
An asexual person is someone who does not experience sexual attraction.
